As an example of the savings, we took the base Enhanced ThinkPad T500 with discrete graphics priced at $1404, with an Online sale price of $1099 and specified some necessary (in our opinion) upgrades.

First off we added the Core 2 Duo P8800 2.66GHz 1066MHz Processor with 3MBL2 cache, we uprated the display to the 15.4″ WSXGA+ TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight, ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 Graphics with 256MB are standard but we upgraded the System Memory to 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 and the Hard Disk Drive to a 500 GB, 7200rpm unit to give plenty of storage

We also always like to add the Intel® Turbo Memory 2GB hard drive cache when we configure a system as we do find it makes a huge difference to HDD performance. Finally we added the Express Card Slot & Smart Card Reader plus the 9 cell Li-Ion Battery.
