In an August line up of the Top 10 All Purpose laptops, Lenovo ThinkPad’s took 3 of the Top 10 slots with the ThinkPad W510 coming first with a workbench score of 118 and a rating of ‘Superior’, the ThinkPad T410 took the 4th slot with a workbench score of 108 and a rating of ‘Very Good’ and at 8 we have the ThinkPad T400s with a workbench score of 112 and a rating of ‘Superior’

In the July issue of PC World in the rankings of the Top 10 Desktop Replacement Laptops we have the Lenovo ThinkPad W701ds taking the Number 1 spot with a Workbe3nch score of 123 and a rating of ‘Superior’, while down at the number 6 slot we have the ThinkPad W700ds with a Workbench score of 98 and a rating of ‘Very Good’.

Whilst we are delighted that our favorite Laptop brand has featured so well in our favorite PC Magazine, the reviewers over at PC World sometimes leave us a little confused! Why is the ThinkPad W510 being lumped in with an ‘All Purpose’ laptop review?

This is a mobile workstation guys! And the ThinkPad T400s was superseded by the ThinkPad T410s back in January, a full 7 months before the rankings were published. Oh, and while we are on the subject, why is an Enterprise grade UltrPortabe like the ThinkPad T400s  in as an ‘All Purpose’ Laptop? We don’t get that one

We are happy the the Lenovo ThinkPad W Series has taken two slots in the July Desktop Replacement Rankings, we think however that the inclusion of the the ThinkPad W700ds will be a little confusing to readers because its no longer available on the Lenovo site. Maybe this is were the ThinkPad W510 should have been?

The Lenovo LePad Android Tablet looks like it could give it’s Tablet PC competitors a real run for the money as the form factor starts to take hold. With pundits praising them, journalists and tech gurus writing odes to them, and media companies heralding a new day, the Tablet PC could cause another computing paradigm shift and like NetBooks, change the way we think about how we access our information.

Tablet PCs are here to stay and they’re only going to get better. Lenovo is working to lead the way in the Tablet PC space and will soon release its LePad Android Tablet computer. If this is anywhere near as good as the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid we saw at CES in January Lenovo will have a winner on it’s hands

According to International Data Corporation (IDC), a global research firm based in Massachusetts, tablet computer sales are expected to grow by 60 percent in the next four years. Lenovo is leading the PC-pack in getting a solidly built and capable tablet to the market, so it’s likely to capitalize on these projections early on.

To be outfitted with an Android operating system, the new LePads will likely first be sold and marketed in China and other Asian and developing markets, thanks in large part to Apple’s notorious avoidance of those regions. Lenovo’s chairman, Liu Chuanzhi, recently said that he worried about Apple breaking into the Chinese tablet market, so the move is likely a step toward stemming that company’s current market dominance.

Lenovo generated much excitement with its recent announcement of the LePhone smartphone and the company recently said that it would commit nearly 20 percent of its entire resources toward the development of new and cutting-edge mobile devices. The recent news about the LePad’s release seems to back that up.

Some have wondered about the company’s ability to issue a tablet computer on such short notice, but they shouldn’t worry. Design and build details will likely come from the previously shelved Lenovo U1 Hybrid – a laptop which featured a removable and completely independent tablet display with a Snapdragon processor and the now obsolete Skylight operating system, which Lenovo dropped in favor of the more able and popular Android system.

The tablet will likely come in some form of the U1 Hybrid’s 10.1-inch removable display, and will probably be equipped with a beefier processor – the rumor mill is rife with speculation about a Qualcomm dual-core processor – and an NVIDIA Tegra 250 graphics card. That could be a strong performance combination.

There are no specifics about release dates, but many sources say that the LePad should see distribution by late 2010, potentially making it the hottest Christmas present in town.

New AMD-powered ThinkPad Edge 15. Time to buy one of the very last ThinkPad X301 UltraPortables available. Lenovo has apparently decided – according to multiple unconfirmed, but highly plausible reports – to discontinue the ThinkPad X300 ultra-thin laptop series in favor of the slightly larger – but more powerful – T410s, which will become the flagship ultraportable in the ThinkPad lineup.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to ThinkPad enthusiasts, as the X300-series was a relatively niche market machine. Granted, it was a great ultra-thin portable – with an integrated optical drive! – but the sales and cost of reinventing the next model in the X300 line probably aren’t in the interests of Lenovo’s bottom line.

However, the ThinkPad T400-series, which will probably take newly created market share, is an incredibly agile replacement. Consider, for instance, the T410s, which weighs less than four pounds and has a .8-inch profile. That should suit the buyers concerned with portability. Add to that the fact that the T410s features an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a choice of advanced graphics cards, and you have a pretty solid performance machine as well.

One of the biggest issues with the discontinuation of the X300-series ThinkPads is the absence of a 13-inch machine, but this shouldn’t be a problem either. For just an extra inch of real estate – as if that should be a problem – users have the benefit of the 1440 x 900 WXGA+ display that comes with the ThinkPad T410s. There’s even an option for a multi-touch display, which should be a nice change of pace for those looking for an easy, advanced interface.

There are many more options available with the ThinkPad T410s that are absent from the X300-series, so don’t fear, ThinkPad fans; the changes implemented in coming months signal a dedication to quality and a focus on the most important aspects of the ThinkPad lineup.

Lenovo is well know for delivering excellent security solutions on its range of ThinkPad laptops and has now joined nearly 100 other Chinese companies to establish a Green Mobile Phone Alliance, which the company hopes will reduce security concerns for mobile device users.

The strategy, which was adopted by some of the largest names in Chinese technology development – including Spreadtrum Communications, Inc., Hisense, and of course, Lenovo – sets a variety of goals and standards for developers. The end result, the companies say, is to fight malware and other parasitic programs, as well as reduce the number of pre-installed programs that spread obscene material. The companies also hope to work with partners and clients to work together to eliminate illegal software and develop more energy-conscious devices.

According to a company spokesperson these goals are becoming increasingly vital as mobile phones become essential tools for everyday lives. The spokesperson said that pre-installed programming have served as a double-edged sword for mobile phone owners, providing not only convenience and fun, but also excessive fees and, in some cases, obscene content.

Lenovo is helping conquer the pre-installed software problem early on. For example, it took major manufacturers like Dell ten years of active consumer and expert criticism to address the same problem in their laptops.

While Lenovo is not necessarily known as a mobile phone manufacturer here in the US, they are, in fact, the third largest builder in China. There are no publicized plans at the moment to bring forth large-scale mobile phone marketing and sales projects here, their experience – and dedication to clean operating systems – will come in extremely handy in their new Android-powered devices.

We just hope that we will see the Lenovo Skylight, the Lenovo IdeaPad U1, and the superb Lenovo Le Phone in the US before to long. Is that to much to ask Lenovo?

Lenovo has teamed up with VXL Instruments to create two amazing new ultra-thin high-performance laptops – the Itona TL412 and the Itona TL100. The Itona TL412 is a sturdy 14.1-inch machine, while the TL100 is a more compact 11.6 inches.

VXL Instruments is a manufacturer of high-end thin client products which does business on three continents. Long known for its low-profile engineering, the company called on Lenovo to get the most out of the company’s highly respected hardware and software integration skills.

Both machines will have more than enough power. The TL412 boasts a 1.86GHz Intel Celeron dual-core processor, while the TL100 features a 1.0GHz AMD Athlon Neo chip. Each will handle up to 4GB of RAM.

A nice touch with these units is the ability for buyers to choose from a variety of operating systems. Both allow Windows XPe or Windows WES. There are even rumors of plans to add Linux as an option. Also helpful is the integration of VXL’s XLmanage Workgroup Edition, an innovative remote management package.

The TL412 will have an integrated Intel GMA HD graphics card to power its WXGA HD display and the TL100 will come with an integrated ATI Radeon HD3200 card.

Both the TL412 and TL100 will offer integrated WiFi and Ethernet cards for Internet connectivity. For ports, the TL412 will have four USB 2.0 ports and the TL100 will have three.

One of the most impressive highlights of these machines is the integration of energy-efficient processors and operating systems with powerful new lithium-ion batteries, which provide 6+ hours of battery life, making the TL412 and TL100 great options for those on the go.

There’s no word yet on prices, but both Lenovo and VXL say that they will be priced on par with the rest of the slimline market.

The release dates are still up in the air as well, but you can likely expect them around late June.

It is now almost certain that the R Series will be re-launched as the L Series in March and will have the Model designation ThinkPad L412 and ThinkPad L512. We first saw the ‘new’ R Series, i.e., the R410 and the R510 on our launch schedule prior to December 09 and wondered how a refreshed R Series would fit in with Lenovo’s emerging markets and SMB strategy.

The new L Series will be aimed squarely at the mainstream corporate market so it will be interesting to see some specification. Its difficult to see how this all fits together with the T Series, the SL Series and the new ThinkPad Edge. And how will the new ThinkPad L Series be priced? Will they fit in between the SL and the T Series?

The ThinkPad T410 starts currently at $999 with an Intel Core i5-520M 2.40GHz Processor and the SL410 currently stars at $499 with an Intel Celeron T3100 1.9GHz Processor so the new ThinkPad L412 has to sit somewhere in between and offer a clearly defined value proposition.

And the exciting news for the power hungry is, the new ThinkPad W701 and ThinkPad W701ds will be available on the US Lenovo Site at least, on the 1st March 2010. We will see amongst other things, i7 Extreme quad-core processors, up to the quad-core Core i7-920XM with 8MB L3 cache, new NVIDIA® Quadro® Graphics and a Multi-touch screen.

One thing is for sure. Whether your a budget minded buyer or a power user, by the end of March 2010, with the release of the new ThinkPad L412/L512 and the new ThinkPad W701 and ThinkPad W701ds the ThinkPad range of notebooks will have something for everybody.
