The base model SL510 starts at $529, which is a bargain but to to make this a really versatile notebook you will have to spend a little more and upgrade the processor to at least the 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 and add a few more features like Webcam, fingerprint reader, a little more memory and a BluRay Drive if you can stretch.

Both the ThinkPad SL510 and the SL410 move up to rich, vibrant 16:9 high definition screens showing bright colors and reduced glare with VibrantView and Anti-glare technology. The SL510 and SL410 also support HDMI and VGA output for high definition and standard external monitor displays. As a sop to Thinkpad purists, gone is the shiny cover of the first SL Series. The new SL510 and 410 now have a matte-finish cover.

There are a whole host of connectivity options. On select models you can add 3G connectivity together with WiFi, Ethernet and optional Bluetooth.

As with the ThinkPad T400s lenovo is going strong on VOIP with an increased resolution Webcam, a microphone mute button and a much improved digital microphone for clear digital voice transmission. It looks as though Lenovo is about to release the new ThinkPad SL410 and the ThinkPad SL510 along with a newly designated L410 and L510 model line up in the USA. The new ThinkPad SL:410 and SL510 gets to the starting blocks 4 months before the new ThinkPad T410 and T510.

Lenovo ThinkPad SL300, the new T20?

The ThinkPad SL300 was quietly released by Lenovo this week as an addition to the new ThinkPad SL Series. With its 13.3-inch screen, optional Blu-Ray drive and base price of just $769, it has to be the Ultraportable bargain of the year.

At 4.6-pound the ThinkPad SL300 is no X301 killer, but at this price, its going to tempt a lot of small business owners and soloprenuers who need to small form factor notebook for travel and Business Presentations. It kind of reminds us of the superb little ThinkPad T20 and T30 which were so good to carry around and use in their day.

With the ThinkPad SL300 you get a choice of the Intel GMA X4500 integrated graphics chipset or the NVIDIA GeForce 9300M 128MB dedicated GPU, up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, and a choice of Hard Drives to 320GB.

You can also choose the optional Intel Turbo Memory 2GB module for faster system responsiveness.

You know sometimes I think as a group ThinkPad devotees are worse than Apple fanboys and girls!To be honest there is very little real ‘meat’ to this argument other then the fact that the new ThinkPad SL400 and SL500 are errr …… different?

Whenever you get a group of people who frantically loyal to a brand, emotions will run high. To be honest though, I never thought it would be this bad! Thanks goodness that Lenovo came up with the IdeaPad brand when they wanted to launch their consumer range of laptops earlier this year.

I mean, could you imagine what the outcry would have been if we had an IdeaPad U110 that had been branded a ThinkPad instead? I shudder to think!

Anyway, we really do believe that the uber ThinkGeeks have missed the point with the ThinkPad SL Series.

The SL400 and SL500 and whatever new models Lenovo introduce into the range are as much an IT Solution and a service as they are a model of  ThinkPad notebook. Let me quote from the thread.

“I have lots of friends who are highly intelligent, successful business people who just want a notebook solution that works.

They are computer literate, but not IT literate.

They want, (and need) a solution that schedules backups and updates drivers, and has a great warranty package if things go wrong. These are the same people that buy a Toyota Prius, or Ford Focus Edge and DON’T expect to have to change the oil every Sunday afternoon.

They are focused, busy people who live the internet lifestyle. They want to drive into the Toyota Dealership on a Monday morning, walk in to reception that has not the faintest smell of oil, pick up the keys to the courtesy car, and a cup of fresh brewed coffee for the onward drive to the office or client.”

And that’s what the ThinkPad SL Series is about, it’s as much a concept as it is a model range.

Well, check out this excellent video review from Lenovo and see if you agree. This really does look a great notebook and we particularly like the Blu-Ray drive option and the HDMI connectivity. This is going to make for a great presentation tool.
