ThinkPad X220 and X220 Tablet launch review. The new 2011 ThinkPad X220 and X220 Tablet are here and both are a huge step up in terms of performance, design and ergonomics. This is real power at your command when you’re on the move.

<– Click Here, For more information on the incredible ThinkPad X220 Series

Featuring the latest Intel 2nd generation iCore Sandy Bridge processors with HD3000 Integrated Graphics the very latest 2011 ThinkPad UltraPortable and X220 Tablet make sure that Lenovo retain the crown for the ‘Best in Class’, in the Business UltraPortable sector.

Lenovo has opted not to go for the ULV Core i7 2657M processors that we forecast in the 2011 ThinkPad Release Date article, instead going for the same range of 2nd gen iCore Processors found in the 2011 T Series. Let’s take a look at each model separately

ThinkPad X220 UltraPortable Review

Features at a glance. With the option to specify up to the Intel® Core™ i7-2620M 2.7GHz Processor, the new X220 comes close to perfection in terms of ultraportable processing power when combined with the new HD 3000 integrated graphics with 12eu’s.

The doubling of graphics processing ability over the previous 6eu’s of the HD2000 means you’re achieving twice the performance, virtually eliminating the need for a dedicated GPU, unless of course you are an avid gamer!

Combined with the quad-core Central Processing Unit, graphics, cache, a memory controller and PCI-Express connectivity all etched onto a single wafer of silicon you achieve an enormous performance increase, and vitally important in an UltraPortable, substantial increase in battery life.

The new X220 will also feature the enhanced VOIP functions that have been introduced in the new ThinkPad T420 and T520 which bring VOIP calling with the same quality as a landline using the dual array digital microphones.

You can enable either Private Chat mode which cuts out background noise when there is just you and the person you’re talking to or you can choose Conference Call mode that will pick up everything in the room when you’re in a group around a conference table.

Keyboard noise suppression technology virtually eliminates keyboard clicks from interfering with the call.

USB 3.0 is available along with the 3 USB 2.0 ports, one of which is ‘always on’ so that you can charge your favorite peripherals with the laptop switched off. USB 3.0 is only available with the Core i7-2620M processor.

Lenovo Rapid Drive Technology

Lenovo have developed ‘Rapid Drive’ technology, which we saw in its first iteration at CES 2010 on the IdeaPad Y460 as a pairing of a an SSD Drive with a conventional spinning hard drive. The idea was that the operating system and key data required for the boot sequence would be loaded on the small capacity SSD, with all the main programs and data loaded on the conventional Hard Drive.

There has been some confusion out there amongst other reviews with what exactly ‘Rapid Drive is in the new generation of 2011 ThinkPad’s so we spoke to Preston Taylor, who is the World Wide Manager for the X Series and asked him to clarify what Rapid Drive was, and how it had evolved from the original idea.

Preston told us that when they looked at Rapid Drive as a technology to incorporate into the new ThinkPad lineup, they had to re-think the concept as it was originally conceived in The IdeaPad Y460. (Which actually never really got off the ground)

With the advent of Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0, drive options are listed in order of speed which would be a firstly standalone SSD, then next a ‘paired set’ consisting of a micro msata SSD like the Intel 310 Micro drive and a conventional spinning platter Hard Drive, and then lastly a standalone conventional spinning platter Hard Drive.

When you combine Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0, you now have the latest iteration of ‘Rapid Drive’ technology, with speeds in order as follows

128GB or 160GB Solid State Drive SATA + Lenovo EE 2.0

Paired 80GB mSATA SSD with a choice of 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm HD up to 320GB + Lenovo EE 2.0

A choice of conventional 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm Hard Drives up to 320GB + Lenovo EE 2.0

So the really interesting option for us is the ‘Paired’ drive option using the Intel 310 80GB micro drive which sits in the WWAN slot (So no WWAN if you choose this feature). What we get here is really the best of both worlds, with the speed of an SSD, combined with the capacity of a conventional HD, and with EE 2.0 juicing things up even further, its an enticing alternative, and one we can’t wait to try when we spec up our new ThinkPad for the office!

2011 ThinkPad Design elements

The new ThinkPad X220 also features a newly designed ‘buttonless’ TouchPad with 45% more usable surface area, enabling more control over swipe and pinch gestures. The traditional ThinkPad TrackPoint however retains the two button control.

The X220 is latchless with a self closing hinge design that closes the lid

A really neat highlight we love is the ‘corridor warrior’ feature, or Lenovo’s ‘Instant Resume’ which keeps your ThinkPad connected to the wireless or VPN, for up to 99 minutes as you move from place to place in your office, conference, or hotel. Great idea, and just another one of those thoughtful touches that make the ThinkPad range as whole such a superb business machine.

Battery life is up to 15 hours with the 9 cell, or up to 23 hours with the new external battery pack. UltraBase? Yep, no X Series ThinkPad would be complete without an UltraBase and Lenovo have retained the Series 3 for the X220 so there is no need to purchase an new one if you already own a Series 3 UltraBase or you have standardized on them as a business.

You have the option of specifying the gorgeous new 12.5″ HD 1366×768 resolution LED Backlit IPS (In Plane Switching) Display which will give you bright, extra wide viewing angles

The design of the new ThinkPad X220 and X220 Tablet has evolved again and the 2011 models have a clean, slimmer elegant look, with the hint of a curve on the front edge of the keyboard, and at 3 lbs, are a far cry from the heavy, boxy ThinkPad’s of days gone

ThinkPad X220 Tablet Review

For the general feature set of the 2011 ThinkPad X220 Tablet it is virtually the same as the standard X220, with a few distinct differences which we will outline in this review.

The first and most obvious is that this is of course a Tablet PC and whilst the ThinkPad X Series Tablets have long been the very best, the new X220t takes that definition to the next level, and offers pen, finger and keyboard input options. And how about this neat little feature? How many times have you lost a Tablet Stylus? Not with the new X220t. Walk away from your stylus, and your Tablet gives you an audible warning! What a superb idea!

The MultiTouch 300 NIT display accepts 2 finger touch 5 finger gestures, plus Pen and the Outdoor 300 NIT WV IPS Display for Pen Input has scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass which is military specifications tested to survive in excessive environments. Corning Gorilla Glass strengthens the display enabling it to resist scratches, knocks and mistreatment when you’re out and about.

This feature is a boon for construction workers, site visits, and field work of any kind.

Battery Life with the 9 cell is up to 15 hours and 16 hours with the external battery pack.

Processor options go up to the Intel® Core™ i7-2620M but in the spec sheet we received, the Core™ i7-620M is also offered? 2nd gen Sandy Bridge starts with the Core™ i3-2310M 2.1GHz Processor

ThinkPad X220 and ThinkPad X220 Tablet – Lenovo excels

Lenovo has done a remarkable job with the new 2011 X220 Series. From the superb enterprise class features like ‘Instant Resume’, class leading VIOP functionality and legendary ThinkPad reliability to the power of the full blown Sandy Bridge architecture, these are supremely capable Ultraportables, equaling the power of many 14″ and 15″ laptops.

The ThinkPad X220 and ThinkPad X220 Tablet yet again leave the rest of the industry playing catch up, and that’s a game they are not likely to win. Both the ThinkPad X220 and X220 Tablet will be available mid April. Make sure your at the front of the queue!

Stunning new X120e for 2011. Lenovo ThinkPad X120e Review. The ThinkPad X100e was released to rave review this time last year, but it had its flaws. Now it doesn’t! Battery life was not really good enough, heat output was to high and Lenovo omitted an HDMI out.

The new ThinkPad X120e puts all of that right. The first ThinkPad to be released with the new AMD Fusion E-Series Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), the X120e performs like a little demon and combines great graphics processing with 6 hours battery life with the 6 cell battery. All in a package starting at less than $400 in the US.

The AMD Fusion Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) is a low power mobile architecture that combines the CPU with the Graphics Chip (GPU) on a single energy efficient piece of silicon.

That should give the ThinkPad X120e enhanced 1080p HD playback together with 65 percent overall faster graphics performance and more processing muscle when running business applications.

To quote Dilip Bhatia, Vice President, ThinkPad Marketing and Product Operations, Lenovo. “We’ve optimized the ThinkPad X120e to not only give businesses an excellent experience creating and consuming multimedia content, but we’ve also made key improvements to an area that has plagued laptops: battery life.”

The ThinkPad X120e will give you longer battery life – up to 30 percent longer – for more than six hours and meets Energy Star 5.0 specifications and carries the EPEAT Gold mark. So no more hot knee’s and loosing the battery after a couple of hours! Oh, and did we mention that the X120e has an HDMI? Hurray!

The Lenovo ThinkPad X201s shares the same body as the ThinkPad X201, but the brain is in a league of its own. Outfitted with premium low-voltage processors – which are quickly gaining ground in the power department over non-CULV processors – and plenty of RAM, the X201s ushers in a new era for the portable notebook computer.

<– Learn More – Check for the Latest ThinkPad X201 Coupon Code

Priced around $1,300, it’s a bargain for users that are looking for portability without sacrificing power.

Mobile Powerhouse

The ThinkPad X201s comes with one of two new Intel Core i7 low-voltage processors, each of which was designed to provide power comparable with similar high-voltage processors. When you outfit the X201s with the standard 3GB – maximum 8GB – RAM, you really see how Lenovo is pushing the envelope on portable power. Running everything has gotten easier, too, since the new X201s offers Microsoft Windows 7, which has been tailored to Lenovo’s exacting specifications to squeeze the maximum juice out of its processor.

To store all of your data, you can choose a variety of hard drive options for the ThinkPad X201s. There are the classic disk-type hard drives in sizes from 250GB to 500GB. For something cutting edge and lightning fast, there is also the option for a solid-state 128GB hard drive.

Superb Screen Options – inc Multi Touch

Just like the Lenovo ThinkPad X201, the X201s features the standard Lenovo 12.1-inch WXGA widescreen display, which offers great video display with clear details and smooth color transition. The display is optimized for working in varied lighting scenarios, which should come in very handy for people working out in the field.

The keyboard on the X201s – just like the X201 – is full-size, and is one of the only laptops in its class to offer such a thing. Also like the X201, the X201s features a new, optional half-sized TouchPad at the bottom of the keyboard which comes in very handy, especially when you make use of the Multi-Touch capability.

For a machine this size, the Lenovo ThinkPad X201s has a high capacity for peripheral use, with three USB ports, a VGA port for connecting secondary or external displays, and the same choice of a 3-in-1 or 5-in-1 card reader as the ThinkPad X201.

In terms of connectivity the Lenovo ThinkPad X201s has the standards – an integrated Gigabit Ethernet card and an integrated Intel WiFi card. However, there’s also an ExpressCard/54 slot in case you want to incorporate a 3G or 4G mobile broadband card. Of course, there is an integrated webcam – 2 mega-pixels – mounted in the display.

ThinkPad X201s Battery Life

You can choose between three different Lithium-Ion batteries for the Lenovo ThinkPad X201s. If you are a light user or plan on using an outlet most of the time, the four-cell battery is more than adequate. But just why you would buy an X201s if your not going to go out you wouldn’t’t be looking at the X201s, which is just built to travel. That’s why it’s best to opt for the six-cell or nine-cell battery, the latter of which will provide up to 12 hours of life on a single charge.

ThinkPad X201s Specifications:

Processor: Intel Core i7-620LM(2.0GHz) to Intel Core i7 640LM(2.13GHz)
Operating Systems: Windows XP Professional to Windows 7 Ultimate
Hard Drive: 250GB, 320GB, 500GB; 80GB, 128GB (Solid-state)
Ports: 3 USB; VGA; Headphone/Microphone; ExpressCard/54; 5-in-1/3-in-1 Card Reader
RAM: 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, 6GB, 8GB
Display: 12.1” WXGA+ LED Display
Connectivity: Gigabit Ethernet; Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000BGN to Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 AGN; Bluetooth
Battery: 4-Cell, 6-Cell, 9-Cell
Dimensions: 11.6” x 8.3” x .08-.14”
Weight: 2.48-3.11 LBS

The build of the ThinkPad X201s shows the money that Lenovo puts into creating ultra-strong design. Not only does the body of the machine – which encases the hard drive and processor – have a roll-cage, but so does the display. While we wouldn’t recommend dropping the X201s intentionally, you probably won’t have to replace your machine if it should fall. Best of all? The X201s has a starting weight of 2.5 pounds.

ThinkPad X201s – The Ultimate UltraPortable

The starting price of $1,339 puts the Lenovo ThinkPad X201s square in the middle of the high-end ultra-portable market. This is the perfect machine if you’re searching for something powerful enough to handle just about any computing task, but also something that you can take on frequent trips without weighing yourself down. The ThinkPad X201s is the ultimate combination of power, portability and outstanding battery life.

The ThinkPad X Series has long worn the UltraPortable crown, and the good news is, the new ThinkPad X201 is still very much ‘King of the Hill’. The ThinkPad X201 is an UltraPortable powerhouse that will handle just about anything that you have to do during a working day and it will do it on the move, at home, or in the office.

With an Online Sale price of around $1099, superb build quality and usability, and lots of customization options, The X201 represents excellent value.

ThinkPad X201 – UltraPortable Domination!

Intel’s new Core i5 and i7 processors ensure that the Lenovo ThinkPad X201 blows away the competition, especially when equipped with the maximum 8GB of RAM. Considering the power the X201 puts in your hands, it’s no wonder the X201-series dominates the UltraPortable notebook sector.

Even the base processor and RAM outfit is more than capable of handling the most power-intensive software programs, but start to customize some power options you can rest assured that nothing else comes close in terms of performance.

There’s also plenty of storage space on the internal hard drive so you can manage all of your data without carrying around external hard drives. If you want the fastest hard drives on the market, opt for the solid-state 128GB drive.

ThinkPad X201 + Lenovo Windows 7 Enhanced Experience

As if the raw power wasn’t enough, there’s also the Lenovo Windows 7 Enhanced Experience which ably ensures that all of your programs run smoothly and with what is as close to “always on” technology that a laptop company has yet offered. Programs run on the X201 open with lightening speed and the startup and shutdown times are much quicker than machines equipped with CULV (low voltage) processors.

The display on the ThinkPad X201 is an excellent 12.1-inch WXGA widescreen display which presents clear color and detail – a vital point for users working in graphic arts or in fields that require precise reproductions of images, such as medicine and architecture.

Superb Keyboard

Lenovo has a long reputation for offering a great machine interface with intuitive and durable keyboards and controls. The full-size keyboard on the X201 is easy to work with and the ever-present center-keyboard TrackPoint – after all these years as a ThinkPad staple – still comes in surprisingly handy. However, for the TrackPoint detractors, Lenovo has added a small TouchPad as well, which features easy control and multi-touch capability.

The ThinkPad X201 features three USB ports, which is surprising for smaller laptop like the X201, a VGA output for connecting to projectors and external displays, headphone/microphone jacks, and a choice of 5-in-1 or 3-in-1 card readers.

ThinkpPConnectivity and Options

Connectivity is great on the ThinkPad X201, too. The Gigabit Ethernet card can keep you connected when you are far from a wireless signal or if you’re desk-bound and want to hookup to your office network with maximum security. There’s an integrated Intel WiFi card and an ExpressCard/54 slot if you want to throw in a 3G Wireless card. There is also a 2 megapixel integrated webcam set atop the display to ensure that you are always within reach of friends, family and colleagues.

If you’re planning on light use while traveling, with the majority of your computer time near an outlet, the base four-cell battery should do the trick. If you’re counting on going cordless for long periods of time, however, the nine-cell battery can provide up to 12-hours of life on a single charge.

The ThinkPad X201 is an incredibly powerful, ultra-portable laptop with an outstanding battery life. It’s not the prettiest machine out there, but it’s certainly the most capable. If you’re a die-hard ThinkPad fan, though, you’ll love the boxy icon shape and the ultra-strong frame and case, which will come in extremely handy when you’re out in the field.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X100e has now set the benchmark for NetBook and entry level UltraPortables for 2010. The design is outstanding, it looks quite frankly, stunning, and it feels solid, just like a ThinkPad should. And at an entry price of $449, it’s excellent value.

<– Review and Buy your ThinkPad x100e Now!

The ThinkPad X100e has been specifically designed to be comfortable to use. Combining a lovely 11.6″ High Definition display full sized keyboard, MultiTouch touchpad and the iconic ThinkPad TrackPoint, the X100e really is a delight.

Lenovo designers have incorporated a new style ‘contemporary’ island keyboard, which feels responsive and firm, with little or no noticeable flex while typing. With the slightly enlarged keys and the removal of little used keys to give extra space, it really is comfortable and a joy for extended use.

Visual Change

Visually the ThinkPad X100e breaks with a longstanding ThinkPad tradition. It comes in colours other than black! With Heatwave Red, Arctic White, and for the purists amongst us Midnight Black, we can have a funky looking X100e or stick with convention and go Black.

With the ThinkPad X100e open however, nothing changes, the nice looking modern style ‘island’ style keyboard is black, with black palm rest, screen frame and touchpad. For the ThinkPad Geek in all of us, we have the red TrackPoint and red highlights on the mouse keys. I know that’s only a small visual element, but its just so ‘ThinkPad’, and well, it just looks good!

Aesthetically, the ThinkPad X100e could be a smaller ThinkPad T400s. It just looks right. Now, as for color choice, from a personal point of view I didn’t like the white, loved the Heatwave Red, but mine will be in black. It reminds me of a much loved IBM ThinkPad 240x I used to own and you can call me stickler if you like but in black the ThinkPad X100e really does look like an enterprise class Ultraportable. It’s almost perfection.

AMD Power

In a further break with tradition the new ThinkPad X100e comes with a range of AMD processor options including AMD Athlon Neo Single and Dual Core and AMD Turion™ X2 Dual Core Mobile Processors. Running in an UltraPortable the size of the ThinkPad X100e the AMD Turion™ X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor is a great choice, and one we had predicted Lenovo would make for the new X100e. Not only does it keep the cost down, it delivers exceptional performance and long battery life.

At launch, Graphics come courtesy of an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics chip AMD VISION Pro Technology which should deliver outstanding performance on visual applications for both productivity and entertainment. AMD VISION Pro Technology has been optimized to work with Windows 7 to achieve an advanced visually powerful and rich experience and what we saw on the truly beautiful 11.6″ LED backlight display certainly impressed us.

From the start, the AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 and AMD M780G with ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics will be available with further AMD Athlon Neo and Turion options available later in Q1. The choice right now has to be the AMD M780G which incorporates the ATI Avivo™HD3 Technology video decoder to seamlessly decode and playback HD-DVD and Blu-ray content.

We haven’t tested any games yet, and whilst we don’t expect to be able to play Halo 3 or Crysis, this little wonder should handle most other stuff at lower frame rates and certainly will allow us to check in on our World of Warcraft Level 80 warrior whilst we are on our travels!

ThinkPad X100e, the Super NetBook!

So where does the ThinkPad x100e sit in the rapidly convergent small Notebook, NetBook, Ultraportable niche? Well, Lenovo wants to categorize the ThinkPad X100e as an entry level UltraPortable, and we think that’s were it should sit. It certainly crosses the line from NetBook, moves a step up, and completely redefines the form factor.

With Professional-Grade Features, the performance needed to support corporate operating systems like Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, the ThinkPad X100e goes way beyond NetBook. Incorporating Lenovo’s ThinkVantage Technologies, hardware and software tools that help Enterprise IT professionals deploy, manage and maintain their PCs the X100e is sure to be a winner with corporate’s and according to the feedback Lenovo has been getting, the ThinkPad X100e is just what they are looking for.

Like all other ThinkPad products the X100e is globally available and features global technical support along with a variety of warranty options.

Disappointments?

So are there any disappointments? Yes, a couple. The biggest of which is that we don’t think that the ThinkPad designed team have been as innovative as the could have been with the X100e. The ThinkPad team in Raleigh, North Carolina, have a long tradition of designing some of the most innovative and superbly engineered notebooks and UltraPortables ever made.

The original ThinkPad T20, the superb ThinkPad 240x, the ThinkPad 701 Butterfly, the original ThinkPad X Series, and recently the X300, the ThinkPad T400s, the outstanding W700, the list is endless.

They had the opportunity with the ThinkPad X100e to raise the bar so high that no other manufacturer could ever hope to match it. The bottom line is that the X100e could have been lighter and battery life at 5 hours with the 6 Cell is not quite good enough. And where is the finger print reader? Isn’t this an enterprise level notebook? And only VGA out? Where is the HDMI port to play back all that great HD content?

The real icing on the cake of course would have been an optional UltraBase and that is something we had hoped the boys in Raleigh would have designed in to the package. An Ultrabay would have provided so many more options, just like the grown up X Series the ThinkPad X100e emulates. With an UltraBay for optional Optical Drive, additional Hard Drives, Battery, plus DisplayPort, HDMI and multi monitor connectivity.

Grips over, the ThinkPad X100e is superb.

Now, grips over, and having got that off our chest, the ThinkPad x100e, at an entry price of $449 really is a superb little notebook and truly does redefine the NetBook, morphing into to truly useable entry level UltraPortable. Its a fact the 60% of NetBook’s never leave the home or office. We don’t see this happening with the ThinkPad x100e.

With the power to handle most Office tasks and entertain on the go the ThinkPad X100e should become the de facto standard for today’s working traveller. Add to that the fact that with the more powerful optional AND Turion Processor which will be available later in the 1st Quarter, this new baby ThinkPad really does redefine the word UltraPortable.

ThinkPad X100e – The Bottom Line

The ThinkPad x100e is now the new industry benchmark and creates a new ‘Super NetBook’ category. Competitors like HP, Dell and Acer will eat their hearts out when they get their hands on an X100e. No other laptop brand has the sheer cachet of the ThinkPad, and the X100e interprets that so well.

Make no mistake, despite the odd gripe, the ThinkPad X100e is a truly outstanding notebook. However you want to categorize it, as a Super NetBook or entry level Ultraportable, it does the job extremely well. Its small light and powerful, has excellent graphics, a superb screen and an excellent keyboard.

Add to that, the fact that it also looks ‘the business’ Whether you’re on the sofa, in the coffee shop, the airport lounge or in a boardroom meeting, the X100e is going to look good. At a starting price of $449 the ThinkPad X100e is the one to beat in 2010. Go buy one!

In the newest release of the ThinkPad X200, Lenovo’s ultra-portable notebook, the company has improved on the processing capabilities, has further decreased the weight.

<– Redeem the Latest ThinkPad X200 Coupon Code

More wireless connectivity options are now offered, making the X200 perfect for businesspeople regularly on-the-go. The ThinkPad X200 is an extremely capable machine with superb build quality.

The latest ThinkPad X200 comes standard with the Intel Core 2 Duo P8400(2.26GHz) processor, which, for a notebook of this size, is fast; you may also upgrade to the Intel Core 2 Duo P8600(2.4GHz). Supported by a minimum 3GB of RAM, the X200 is fully capable of running a full suite of programs simultaneously with little lag. There’s also plenty of space for all of your data, since the ThinkPad X200 comes standard with a 160GB hard drive.

Widescreen

The 12.1-inch screen on the X200 – now in widescreen format – may be small, but it packs a visual punch with its sharp colors and extremely crisp picture. The X200 has also been slightly widened to provide for larger keys, which give the user a more comfortable typing experience. Of course, there is also the very responsive and smooth TouchPad with large, red-accented buttons for easy clicking and a center-keyboard TrackPoint for simple navigation.

Staying in Touch

For when you need to stay in touch with colleagues, but you can’t get a wireless signal or for when you just want the reliability of a landline, the X200 features a built-in Gigabit Ethernet card. For wireless access, there’s an integrated Intel Wi-Fi Link 5300 and a Verizon WWAN card; there’s even a Bluetooth chip for use of wireless peripherals.

And Juice on the loose!

Just because the ThinkPad X200 has plenty of power doesn’t mean that it’s a battery hog. In fact, with the standard 6-cell battery, the X200 will run for more than three hours with moderate usage. If you want the X200 operate for an entire trans-Atlantic flight or for a long trip, opt for the 9-cell battery, which will give you about eight-hours of life.

ThinkPad X20o has plenty of ports for peripheral connection. There are 3 USB ports, an Ethernet port, VGA output, microphone input, headphone output, a 5-in-1 card reader and a docking station port for the excellent ThinkPad X200 UltraBase.

The UltraBase supports Ultrabay Slim Blu-ray, CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo and Multi-Burner drives; can also house a second ThinkPad Serial-ATA hard drive, has Integrated battery charger – Lets you power up a spare battery for the road and has Integrated stereo speakers, microphone in, headphone out.

With the UltraBase you also get Digital and analog video support – VGA monitor port and DisplayPort, 4 extra USB ports and it all runs from your standard X200 power supply. The ThinkPad X200 UltraBase adds so much versatility to the ThinkPad x200, its almost a must buy!

Built with a magnesium alloy roll cage and a hard plastic shell, the ThinkPad X200 is sure to endure the rigors of regular travel, regardless of the circumstances. There are also strong steel hinges on the monitor to ensure that it stays put. As with other ThinkPads, there is also a spill-guard on the keyboard that will protect the vital components from any accidents.

ThinkPad X200, when you want the best

Tough, fast and light, the ThinkPad X200 is a traveler’s dream. It’s fully capable of handling even the hardest use and offers enough Internet connectivity options to make sure that the user is never out of the loop. With a current starting price of about $1,099 its not cheap, but it is the best money can buy and its the only choice for business owners, soloprenuers and professionals that demand the highest quality and performance.

Though slightly slower than the ThinkPad X200, the Lenovo ThinkPad X200s makes up for it with its weight, or lack of it, – it’s the lightest ThinkPad available – and with a longer battery life.

<– Redeem the latest ThinkPad X200s Coupon Code and eCoupon

It also provides incredible connectivity and sufficient processing power to handle the average business and office software. With a starting price of about $999, this laptop makes a great addition to any traveling businessperson’s mobile office.

The base ThinkPad X200s is powered by an Intel® Celeron® M processor 723 running at 1.2GHz up to the Intel Core 2 Duo processor SU9400 (1.4GHz, 3MB L2, 800MHz FSB) in the Elite ThinkPad X200s with integrated graphics.

While slightly slower than the X200 processor, it can still handle the multi-tasking demanded by today’s business travellers. It’s also a great option as a back-up system for managers and employees looking to work from home or on the go.

Controls and display on the ThinkPad X200s are strikingly easy to manipulate and interact with onsidering the X200s’ small size. The 12.1-inch screen improves upon its predecessor – the ThinkPad X61s – with a 1440 x 900 WXGA+ widescreen display in the Enhanced and Elite models, as opposed to the previous 4:3 aspect-ratio display, which allows for a greater ease of viewing and also creates more space for the newly upgraded full-size keyboard.

Cursor movement is controlled by the TrackPoint in the center of the keyboard; there is no touch-pad on the X200s.

When you want to stay in touch you have a few options with the ThinkPad X200s. The unit comes equipped with an Intel Wi-Fi Link 5300 for connecting in Wi-Fi-rich public areas. There’s also a 1GB Ethernet Card for working from a home office or wired hotel room. There’s even a Bluetooth chip Wireless USB. Should you want to upgrade, you can opt for WiMAX or a 56 Kbps dial-up modem. The choice is yours.

Battery power is superb in the X200s. And that really is it’s raison d’être. The 6 cell battery will last for about 6 1/2 hours of average use, but with the 9 cell battery, you’ll get close to 14 hours! The only real challenge with the 9 Cell option is that it brings the weight up to 3.3lbs.

Inputs available on the ThinkPad X200s include: three USB ports; Ethernet port; ExpressCard slot; SD Card slot or an optional five-in-one card reader; microphone jack; and headphone jack.

Optional upgrades include a built-in webcam, and of course, the X200 UltraBase docking station, which is required if you need an optical drive, since the X200s doesn’t have one built in. In our opinion though, the UltraBase is an absolute ‘must have’. If you have never experienced the convenience of just slotting an X Series notebook into the UltraBase when you get home, then you just have to buy one, and get DVD recordable if you can afford it for back up.

The ThinkPad X200s magnesium frame is skinned in a carbon-fibre infused plastic that is lightweight – its starting weight is 2.4lbs. – and extremely durable – a feature that is especially important on frequent trips through airports and in frequent transport.

<– Check the latest ThinkPad X200s Coupon Code

Our Conclusion? The ThinkPad X200s is great for someone looking for Netbook portability without the lower performance that NetBook’s provide, providing you can stand the price tag of course.

It actually weighs less than our Lenovo IdeaPad s10! The ThinkPad X200s is a gem of an ultra portable notebook and is at the pinnacle of build quality and engineering excellence. If you want the very best ultraportable, then buy the Lenovo ThinkPad X200s

The new ThinkPad X200 Series has been eagerly anticipated by ThinkPad fans but the launch has also been accompanied by some trepidation! Could the new ThinkPad X200 notebooks meet the expectations of the huge loyal ThinkPad X61 user base? Could the ThinkPad X200 Tablet be the equal of the ThinkPad X61 Tablet, which long been considered the best notebook in the sector?

We asked ourselves these and many similar questions when we first heard about the new X200 Series back in June.

The X Series notebook that we have notably missed reviewing on this blog has been the ‘s’ designation X Series, in other words, those with the lower power consumption Intel Montevina Low Voltage Processors.

Because this new Processors draw far less power, these lightweight ultraportables achieve outstanding battery life.

Both the Intel SL9400 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo, SL9300 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo and SU9300 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo are available as options when you configure your machine.

The X200s is actually a much slimmer and lighter version of the X200 and when we say slimmer and lighter, we mean it!
The X200s is the lightest ThinkPad to date only weighing 2.47 pounds with the 4-cell battery installed. Of course to get the maximum out of this lightweight wonder, you really will have to option the 9 Cell Battery, but the great thing is, it only adds $50 to the price.

When you look at it the X200s looks heavier than it is and its only when you hold it that you actually realise what an incredible job the Lenovo engineers have done.

The X200s uses the same carbon fibre/glass fibre technology as the ThinkPad X300 and the X301 to keep the weight at a minimum.

Just as we were about to write a detailed review we had an email in from the Lenovo with some really informative video by Matt Kohut, Lenovo’s Competitive Analyst .

There are a couple of videos here which you will find really compelling. We love Matt’s ‘no nonsense’ approach and you can tell this guy loves what he does and loves his product.

There is some really revealing stuff here so we suggest that you review both of these videos, and then go off and buy the ThinkPad X200 of your choice, whether it’s the X200, X200s or the superb ThinkPad X200 Tablet.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X200 takes up where the ThinkPad X61 leaves off and is very similar to its much more expensive sibling, the superb ThinkPad X300.

The X200 will not fit into a manila envelope like the super slim ThinkPad X300 does, but it’s performance is better than the X300 and starts $800 cheaper!

Overview

The ThinkPad X61 has made a name for its self as the best ultraportable you can buy, and it certainly looks like Lenovo, with the ThinkPad X200 have produced a worthy successor.

Just like the larger ThinkPad’s the X200 has all of the same qualities that we have come to expect, and thanks to the new widescreen the X200 chassis is wide enough to support a fuller sized keyboard.

Whilst the X200 smaller and lighter than the more traditional ThinkPad counterparts it certainly doesn’t’t lack in power. With a choice of the new Intel Core 2 Processors and the option for fast SSD storage, up to 4GB of RAM and Intel Turbo memory this is a very fast little notebook, ideal for working on the move.

Combine that with the incredible battery life, superb ‘Green’ credentials, and almost complete lack of discernable heat, we can see the X200 taking the crown of the Top Ultraportable, a title that deservedly belonged to the X61.

So will the X200 eat into sales of the super slim X300? No, we don’t think so. The ThinkPad X300 was designed with a completely different user in mind, those that want a cutting edge fast start notebook that is completely independent of peripherals, and who are prepared to pay for bleeding edge technology.

Looks Like a ThinkPad

The X200 now sports a widescreen display. Whilst this may disappoint the diehard ‘square screen’ fans, who love the standard 4:3 ratio aspect screen seen on the X61, widescreen are now becoming the standard issue for a notebook.

The notebook user who will miss the 4:3 aspect ratio the most are designers and coders who love the taller screen size.

The X200 sees the red accented mouse buttons coming back from days of ThinkPad 240, which has long been our favorite ‘small’ ThinkPad. The power button is the same as the X300, except it is not backlit.

The X200 looks really good and borrows a few styling cues from the new SL Series whilst maintaining that indefinable X Series look and feel that we have loved since the X20 first emerged in September 2000

Built Like a ThinkPad

The X200 is built like a ThinkPad should be, and just feels superb. Build quality is excellent with a magnesium-alloy casing on both the top and bottom of the casing and an internal magnesium “roll-cage” there’s virtually no flex.

The traditional steel screen hinges that we’re used to seeing on ThinkPad notebooks are there are two lid latches .

The keyboard features two drain holes to carry away any coffee or red wine that you may spill when the guy in the seat in front of you drops his seat whilst you have your notebook on the tray table in front of and the ThinkPad Active Protection System is there to protect your hard drive if you drop your X200 going through security rushing to catch your connection.

Like all ThinkPad’s the X200 is easy to upgrade with the Memory and Hard Drive access panels being easy to locate and remove and even if you don’t go for WWAN straight away the antenna is preinstalled so all it needs is the WWAN Card popping in and you’re up and running.

Types like a ThinkPad

The X-series ThinkPad has always had the best keyboard of any ultraportable out there and now, because of the extra width of the chassis the keyboard on the X200 is exactly the same the T-series keyboard and that’s the best laptop keyboard bar none.

The real surprise is the lack of an UltraNav TouchPad on the X200. The TouchPad was first introduced on the X30 as a sop to those users who couldn’t get used to the TrackPoint and the ThinkPad X200 reverts to just having a TrackPoint with mouse buttons just below the space bar. Personally I think this is a great configuration and have never used a TouchPad on any ThinkPad that I have owned.

Your index finger works the TrackPoint, and thumb works the left/right mouse buttons and you’ll fly!

Great Screen

We have always liked ThinkPad screens but the X61 screen was just not quite bright enough. The X200 screen gets a far brighter screen which is a great improvement. Brightness has been taken up to 200-nits from the 150-nits (sounds like something you catch!)

The viewing angles of the screen are good and colors remain vibrant until you get to really wide viewing angles. As a mobile presentation tool for those PowerPoint slide shows the X200 is excellent, with the only real drawback being the mono speaker. You really do need a pair of ear phones is your going to watch a movie or listen to music.

Use a pair of iPhone type earbuds and the quality of sound goes up to something really acceptable. Bearing in mind of course that the ThinkPad X200 is not designed as a multi media machine, so don’t expect great performance in that area.

Performs Like a ThinkPad

In terms of computing power the X200 is incredible and its going to be difficult for a competitor to match the overall blend of usability and shear muscle that the X200 achieves. Spec this thing up 2.40GHz of dual core power and a 3MB L2 cache, Intel Turbo Memory, SSD storage and 4GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1066 MHz might and you’ll blow your sock of without sacrificing battery life or frying your knees!

The X200 Unplugged

You can configure the ThinkPad X200 with three battery options: 4-cell, 6-cell or 9-cell, but of course, the bigger the battery the longer the battery life and the heavier the weight.

With the 9-cell battery which the X200 weight to jumps to 3.6 lbs instead of the 2.95 lb weight you get with the 4-cell, but for the just over 9 hours of battery life that you get, we think it’s worth it. Hey, grab yourself a 4 cell AND a 9 cell and have done with it.

Cool and Quite

The ThinkPad X200 has been designed from the offset to be quite and the engineers have done an amazing job. The X200 features the fan from the X300 amazingly quiet but just really does keep this notebook running so cool.

This is probably the coolest ThinkPad to date and it really does prove that you can have cool without a roaring fan

Wired for Wireless

The X200 is configurable with several Wi-Fi options:, the Intel WiFi Link 5100, WiFi Link 5300, Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350 and ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express with WiMax support available later on in the year.

Built-in WWAN is an option with theX200 and the great thing is you can add this option at a later date if you wish. Lenovo is building the X200 WWAN ready, so the antenna is built into the lid . Once the urge or need arises to put in a WWAN card, you just order part it requires, All you need to do is sign up with your provider of choice and pop in the Mini PCI card, and you’re all set!

If you’re going to use the X200 with a Phone or PDA the your also going to want to configure your new ThinkPad with the BlueTooth option with the X200 and you also have the option of built-in GPS.

Expansion Options

Like previous X Series, and indeed going back to the ThinkPad 500 classic Ultraportable’s, the X200 comes with an optional but completely essential UltraBase. Drop the X200 into its UltraBase and you now have Stereo Speakers, UltraBay Slim (SATA), 4 USB 2.0 ports, VGA, DisplayPort, Microphone in, Headphone out, RJ-45 Ethernet, Cable lock slot, Key lock slot, 2nd battery charger. You then turn your X200 into a media center!

The Green Machine

The ThinkPad X200 is the first PC to be certified by GreenGuard, it meets a Silver EPEAT rating and is Energy Star 4.0 compliant and Lenovo says that the X200 achieves a 25% lower power consumption than any previous ThinkPad.

Conclusion (We want one!)

Without doubt the ThinkPad X200 is a superb ultraportable and a great notebook in its own right. It’s a more than very worthy successor to the ThinkPad X61 and is going to please its legion of fans. The remarkable battery life, cool and quiet running and outstanding performance are exceptional. Combine this with the remarkable build quality and the engineering finesse that has gone into the X200 will be a hard act to follow for manufacturer who fancied taking the ultraportable crown from the X Series.

Combine that with the great pricing, the expansion capabilities of the UltraBase when you get back home or to the office and the X200 has to be the pinnacle of mobile computer engineering for the traveling professional.

If you believe that good things come in small packages, the ThinkPad X200 is just what ThinkPad X Series fans have been waiting for. This is a real powerhouse of an Ultraportable.

(Oh, and guess what, its nearly twice as fast as a Macbook Air according to benchmarks tests. Your over the Apple Barrel again Steve!)

The Lenovo ThinkPad X200 will come in three versions: X200, X200s and the X200 Tablet. These are going to replace current X61, X61s, and X61 Tablet models.

Currently the first model in the range has been released the X200, and is available to purchase from Lenovo. By the time you read this, the X200s and the X200 Tablet should be available.

Keeping in line with features we have grown to love from the ThinkPad brand, the X200 will include an array of advanced security features, such as TPM v1.2 chip and fingerprint security options.

The TPM chip or ‘Trusted Platform Module’ enables Drive Encryption and Enhanced Data Protection. We would also have like to have seen the Veriface face recognition feature the Lenovo have introduced on the IdeaPad range as an option to a fingerprint reader.

The X200 is the “Performance Model.” It uses normal voltage processors, which are estimated to provide 3.3 to 9.6 hours of battery life. The X200s, or the “Portability Model,” will have an ultra-low voltage CPO, weighing in a 2.47 pounds and estimated to run 4.5 to 13.3 hours on one battery charge. The “Tablet Model” will also use Intel’s LV and ULV chips. Weighing in at 3.55 pounds, it is expected to provide 3.3 to 11.1 hours of battery life.

The new X Series has several multimedia and communications features built in. There is a really good integrated camera with digital zoom, new mono speaker, digital microphone with noise cancellation, and the setup includes audio and noise cancellation software.

The only real downside here is that the speaker, as in the X61 is not all that good, so it’s out with the earbuds again if you want to watch a movie.

Which brings us neatly to the UltraBase because in keeping with past X Series ThinkPad’s, the X200 doesn’t have a built in Optical drive.

The new ThinkPad X Series will feature a 12″ widescreen panel and the new ThinkPad X Series UltraBase features a DisplayPort combining HD video and audio into one digital connector. This design supports the latest graphics providing you with vibrant image quality.

DisplayPort is great news because it finally delivers on the promise of digital displays. It replaces the clunky DVI interface and eventually replaces the analog VGA interface on displays and PCs with an innovative digital solution that supports the latest graphics and LCD technologies.

Lenovo have also given the X200 a much brighter screen the that on the current X61

Dimensions using the 9-cell battery, Width – 11.61 inches, Depth - 9.2 inches, Thickness – 0.8-in to 1.4 inches

Dimensions using the small 4-cell battery, Width – 11.6 inches, Depth – 8.3 inches, Thickness – 0.8 – 1.4″

Weight:

4-cell battery starting at 1.34 kg / 2.95 lbs

6-cell battery starting at 1.47 kg / 3.24 lbs

9-cell battery starting at 1.63 kg / 3.58 lbs

The X200, is quite frankly an absolute powerhouse and easily beats both the ThinkPad X300 and sister brand the IdeaPad U110. Needless to say, it wipes the floor with the Macbook Air. We didn’t need to say that again, but we love rubbing it in!

Watch out for a more detailed review and a comprehensive picture gallery over the next couple of days.
