Lenovo Thinkpad T410 and ThinkPad T510

Mark your calendars! Launch date set for the Lenovo ThinkPad T410 and ThinkPad T510? The new and much anticipated ThinkPad T410 and the ThinkPad T510 look very much like they are going to debut on, or very close to January 7th 2010, just a couple of days after we have slated the new ThinkPad X100e NetBook to Launch and ready for CES 2010 in Vegas.

<– Learn More About the ThinkPad T410ThinkPad T510 and the latest ThinkPad Coupon Codes

Whilst we do not have any definite specifications yet, we do know that the new Intel Calpella equipped ThinkPad T410 and T510 will likely be much slimmer than the existing models and of course much faster because that’s what Calpella focuses on. The whole platform is designed to deliver energy savings, enhanced performance and superior battery life.

And there is nobody better qualified than Matt Kohut, David Hill and the ThinkPad design team to take advantage of what the Calpella platform has to offer.

Because Calpella uses an integrated memory controller and integrated PCI express controller this remove the need for the bottle neck northbridge and older FSB technology.

The Ibex Peak graphics technology optimizes decoding and encoding plus  editing and playback of MPEG-4 AVC video used in Blu-ray Technology and HD 1080p video  so we expect to see the new ThinkPad T410 and T510 fully HD optimized.

The T410 should have a 14.0 ” HD Wide LED Screen with 1366×768 resolution, and the ThinkPad T510 with 15.6″ HD LED Screens for vibrant HD playback, but more importantly for an enterprise level notebook, strong video editing
capabilities.

Because Calpella supports DisplayPort with DPCP is this likely to be the main method for external video output with maybe legacy support for HDMI  and or DVI and VGA? We doubt very much whether Lenovo will dump DVI, but
VGA? Maybe, we’ll see. It depends how brave they are.

Expect Intel Core i5/Core i7 processors based on the Nehalem Micro architecture with the Quad Core i5-750 2667 MHz being the likely starting point.

What else do we know? Well Calpella supports DDR3 memory exclusively and given that DDR3 technology offers the ability to provide higher memory bandwidths using less power we can expect a further performance boost here.

With Hybrid Drive support, integrated memory controller and PCI controller, Ibex Peak Graphics, DD3 memory, Nehalem based Quad processors and superb HD capabilities, the new ThinkPad T410 and ThinkPad T510 promise to set the benchmark for enterprise level notebooks in 2010.

More news on the exciting new Lenovo ThinkPad T410 and ThinkPad T510 as it breaks.

  1. Entscheidung: T400 oder Latitude E6400 - Seite 3 - Notebookforum on November 13th, 2009 10:28 am

    [...]thinkpad[...]

  2. Heather on November 13th, 2009 1:37 pm

How about accessories? Will Lenovo keep the same batteries, drive bays, docking stations, power adapters as the previous T-series models, or is a change-up in order.
Also just one resolution offering for the T410??

  3. Baserk on November 13th, 2009 4:14 pm

Only ‘768′ vertical resolution on the T410?
    That’s simply unacceptable. UNACCEPTABLE!!!
Will have to buy a fully specced, end-of-life/heavily rebated T400 then.
Damned, I was really looking forward to the new T4xx series because the T400s is too pricey for my wallet…
What’s up Lenovo? Since when are business/enterprise customers interested in strong video editing?
You guys really think we all need multimedia notebooks? How silly
What will be the next resolution ffs? 21:9? Yeah, that will be soooo great for some movies.
    Mind boggling decisions imao.

  4. Paul on November 13th, 2009 5:59 pm

Darn, I was really hoping to get one for Christmas! I wonder if there will be a w510 at the same time, and if a 160 or 256GB SSD will be available with it. Now there would be the perfect notebook!

  5. David on November 14th, 2009 5:21 pm

What price range are these things going to be?

  6. Ian Orford, Editor on November 16th, 2009 3:43 pm

Well, we are in a very competitive market David, we cannot see them being anymore expensive than the current models

  7. Robin on November 16th, 2009 3:56 pm

Will these new models (T410 and T510) have the same keyboard as T400s? Thanks.

  8. Ian Orford, Editor on November 16th, 2009 4:00 pm

We could see some larger SSD’s appearing in the new ThinkPad T510 and T410models Paul, and we have it on good authority that the new W Series will be appearing at about the same time as the new T Series. It would seem that the ThinkPad W510, might not be the Thinkpad W510 at all but could be designated the W501, along with the W701 and the ThinkPad W701ds.

Exciting stuff. It will also be intresting to see how the new hybrid drives compare on a cost/speed comparison in a straight race against pure SSD. What do you think?

  9. Ian Orford, Editor on November 16th, 2009 4:14 pm

Whoaa steady Baserk! We could very well see 1440×900 and probably will, but at the end of the day there is only so much you can do in 14″! We are also willing to bet that we could see the new ThinkPad T410 and T510 with Multi-touch, if not at launch, then soon after. We have also heard rumors of a ThinkPad T510 with OLED. What we dont want to do a speculate to much

  10. Ian Orford, Editor on November 16th, 2009 4:31 pm

Good question Heather, we can be pretty certain that power adapters will stay the same, there is just no economic or design advantage in changing them. What we can see is a move towards the new T400s type of batteries which sit flush underneath the notebook. As with the T400s, and of course the forthcoming T410s, if Lenovo implements this type of battery in the ThinkPad T410 and the ThinkPad T510 it allows for more flexibility and better rear port placement.

The UltraBay will be back compatible and the docking stations will follow the ThinkPad Port Replicator Series 3 specification. We are also sure that there will be up to 1440 x 900 resolution screens on the T410 as well as a Mulit-Touch option, perhaps not immediately but soon. It makes sense

  11. Ian Orford, Editor on November 16th, 2009 4:43 pm

We would think that they will be very similar Robin, particularly the flush TrackPad and the new key layout.Ian

  12. Heather on November 16th, 2009 5:19 pm

I don’t think you guys know what you’re talking about. The (Desktop) Quad Core i5-750 2667 MHz in a Thinkpad? yeah those T410/T510 will melt! Also a 1440×900 is a 16:10 screen.

  13. Paul on November 16th, 2009 7:33 pm

Thanks Ian. Yes, hard drive performance is a big deal to me since I use large engineering applications that are database-bound. So I’m especially interested in how well the drive does large bulk writes and small random reads from a database, and if it can do this without long-term degradation.

  14. Ian Orford, Editor on November 17th, 2009 11:30 am

Heather, you are quite right, thank you for pointing that out in so gracious a manner.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrandale_%28microprocessor%29.

As for the screen, you may have that wrong.

  15. Johnny on November 17th, 2009 9:12 pm

    Agree with Baserk.
Business line should be made for business works.
Need 4:3 formats, 16:9 or simular is reason not to buy.

  16. Ian Orford - Editor on November 18th, 2009 4:45 pm

Well, every manufacturer is going 16.9 Johnny, so we may as well all get used to it!

  17. Johnny on November 18th, 2009 5:22 pm

Every Manufacturer was going to Touchpad too!
This was the reason to switch from Toshiba to Lenovo.
Because Trackpoint much faster and a must have for users which WORK with notebooks.

If Lenovo does now decision to say: Other Manufacturer go to 16:9 so we must make it too,
instead of asking business customer what they need, then this is again switching reason.
Just dont understand that such important things can not be choosen when buying it!

Really sad about this – liked my Thinkpad very much.

  18. Ian Orford - Editor on November 18th, 2009 5:33 pm

I think this argument will rage for a while Johnny, from what we understand LCD manufacturers are moving wholesale to 16.9. 4.3 is dead and thats across the board Johnny. Have a read of Matt Kohut comments on the subject

    http://lenovoblogs.com/insidethebox/?p=220

Hope this helps, its not a ThinkPad issue

  19. Johnny on November 18th, 2009 6:32 pm

OK – think i have to use my old notebook much longer – will not buy this.
Let us see if customers will accept this change in future.

Just confusing – would really pay much more money to get a notebook which fits my needs, but seems the manufacturers can not build it.

    Thanx for help

  20. george on November 19th, 2009 5:18 pm

when you say around the same price range as the current models, do you include the current discounts?

    i.e. is there any chance i can get a T410 for ~800-850?

  21. Mauvezin on November 23rd, 2009 11:58 am

“…we do know that the new Intel Calpella equipped ThinkPad T410 and T510 will likely be much slimmer than the existing models…”

    Wonderful !
Can we expect the sama for the forthcoming W 701 or W 710 !?

  22. Ian Orford - Editor on November 23rd, 2009 5:49 pm

I do believe we can! But bearing in mind Mauvezin, some of the new ThinkPad W701 and W701ds will be using the ‘Extreme’ processors

  23. Mauvezin on November 24th, 2009 8:02 am

    Hi Ian :)
Right but according to the Lenovo TP roadmap we can wait for a Calpella W 710 around Feb 2010.
I’m dreaming of a 17′ thin TP with SATA 300 2,5′ and eSATA port .
    Wait’n see ;)

  24. Chris on November 24th, 2009 8:19 am

How long will be the T500 line available on the official Lenovo site ? Till January 7th ? I don’t wont to decide on the new model until I know the exact configuration of T510.

  25. Ian Orford - Editor on November 24th, 2009 12:31 pm

Good thinking Chris. I think your going to want the Calpella ThinkPad T510 however. We can’t say 100% but its almost certain that the both the T400 and T500 will still be available past the T410/T510 launch date, unless of course they start to sell out with the 2009 ThinkPad Black Friday and Christmas Sales

  26. Sang on November 26th, 2009 12:07 am

any news on the release date of sl420/520?

  27. Dr. Duke on November 27th, 2009 9:16 am

I am with you, changing monitors from a 4:3 to 16:10 and now the squat 16:9 saves the manufacturers a lot of pixels but makes the screens far less usable for 80 percent of laptop and desktop users. Why, only a small minority of people use the laptop for movies or video, and when they do, videos can show just fine on a 4:3 screen. Just because the video doesn’t show up on the whole screen only shows the terrible reduction of screen territory on the 16:10. Most people are using laptops and desktops today for, Internet usage, where a taller page with no need of scrolling is far superior, ditto for Word processing, desktop publishing. As an important tool, word publishing is by far the most used application on pc s today. Of course you would rather see a whole page than half of one or even a third of one! Same with internet pages! Same with viewing pdfs or e books of course. I don’t think magazine and book formats are going to go to an awkward very wide and very squat format.

Isn’t it great the manufacturers could tell us how advanced the new screens are, how cool they are with the new 16.9 format. Complete bullshit. We are being ripped off and given a product of far less usability, and the makers are saving money on pixels.

I hope some of the major reviewers will begin to get on this subject and maybe a manufacturer like Lenovo or someone else will put out a model line with the 4:3 format for the 80 percent of people who would greatly benefit.

One more note, the netbooks would really benefit from such a design because when the smaller screens are 16:9 they give such a small fraction of the page, they would be much more readable and usable from everything from web surfing to ebooks, pdfs and the like at 4:3 ratios, and they could still be of small size.

Best to all, maybe someone reading this could forward these ideas to both execs and reviewers.

  28. Ian Orford, Editor on November 27th, 2009 3:22 pm

Hi Sang, we have June for the ThinkPad SL420 and the SL520. Thats what the release schedule is showing us

  29. Ian Orford - Editor on November 27th, 2009 3:27 pm

Trust me Dr. Duke, the people that matter at Lenovo i.e. Matt Kohut and David Hill know how everybody feels, check the Lenovo Blogs to read Matt’s comments. However, I think we are wasting our breath, its the way its going, so we have to deal with it or use old stuff until it falls apart!

  30. John D on November 27th, 2009 4:12 pm

Thanks for this article. Is this speculation that the T410 is coming out in January, or is it based on certain things the company has said?

  31. Ian Orford - Editor on November 29th, 2009 10:07 pm

Hi John, its what we have on the release schedule, its a firm ‘ish January 7th, to coincide with CES. No, its not speculation. Presumably you are waiting for the new Calpella ThinkPad T Series?

  32. Tom on December 9th, 2009 7:35 am

Hi Ian, could You make a speculation of T510 price at the January premiere (basic configuration and discrete graphics)? I’m interested in price interval +/- 100$

  33. admin-today on December 10th, 2009 8:03 am

Hi Tom, if you take the current ‘Online Sale’ of the base configuration, it can’t be far off that, the market is just to competitive to charge premiums right now! We can’t see prices being much different, fingers crossed!

    Cheers, Ian

  34. James on December 12th, 2009 1:12 pm

Any launch dates rumoured yet for the T410s? Also, if the T410 is going to be much slimmer, won’t it eat into the T410s market…

  35. John D on December 13th, 2009 2:19 pm

Absolutely! The only question in my mind right now is, what sort of discreet graphics option will it come with?

  36. Joe Taylor on December 14th, 2009 7:13 pm

    Hi Ian,
So is it fair to say we should wait for the new series since the special sales today only give you a 15% savings? Will the new design be worth 15% more that current technology?
    Thanks,
    Joe

  37. Ian Orford on December 16th, 2009 12:47 pm

Oh Joe, that is a very difficult question to answer! From our personal view point we would say that the new ThinkPad T410 and T510 are worth waiting for. We have just been on a review Web cast with Lenovo and these new Calpella T Series machines will be outstanding. We dont think you will be disappointed if you wait

  38. Ian Orford - Editor on December 16th, 2009 1:01 pm

Not rumor James but fact, we have the ThinkPad T410s scheduled for launch on January 7th at the CES, same as the T410 and T510. And having seen the specs, awesome!

    Hi Ian :)
Have you seen or heard speaking about the W 710 ?

  40. Ian Orford on December 17th, 2009 12:11 pm

Hi Mauvezin, we believed both the W710, and the W710ds were scheduled for release on or around the 7th January, but it looks like they may now be delayed a few weeks. We will keep you posted! Cheers, Ian

  41. Mauvezin on December 17th, 2009 2:08 pm

    Hi Ian :)
Anything new about its height, eSATA port…..can I dare speaking about SATA 6 & USB 3 !??

  45. Ian Orford on December 21st, 2009 1:07 pm

Yes Tyler, the new ThinkPad T410s will have a discrete graphics option!

  46. Tom on December 25th, 2009 2:18 pm

When will be the new models available to buy on the official lenovo site? right after January 7th premiere or there will be delay?

  47. Robert Deed on December 26th, 2009 6:07 pm

    Nvidia + 16:9.. Yeah.. I’m glad I bought myself a T500 w/ 16:10 and ATI.. I cannot stand 16:9 and I cannot stand Nvidia.. especially in mobile.

I hate the every other generation thinkpad keeps going to ATI/Nvidia route, right now ATI has some of the best mobile video chipsets on the market, there was no reason to change. Just update and give us more video memory. (which is really the only shortcoming on the mobility 3650 in my t500)

  48. QAftw on December 27th, 2009 6:10 am

The only thing that could hold me back is an off-centered screen, so I hope the design follows the T400s. Hardware-wise I’m expecting beasts. :D

I’m just afraid I’ll have to wait months, before they are available in Europe. :-(

  49. DoctorWho on December 28th, 2009 9:58 am

How about the X210, any updates on the release date and specs?

  50. Ian Orford on December 28th, 2009 3:05 pm

We will be able to release specs on the 4th January Doctor!

  51. Ian Orford on December 28th, 2009 3:16 pm

Hi Hernando, I think you will find Europe follows pretty quickly after the US

  52. Ian Orford on December 28th, 2009 3:26 pm

Hopefully, Tim, fingers crossed, they will be available on the 7th!

  53. Hossam on December 31st, 2009 5:31 am

The most important feature to me is temperature and battery life (6 cell doesn’t stick out) i hope it will be the same of T400 or better.
And do not have first production issue like T400 ( or like any new product ).

  54. Bradley on January 1st, 2010 8:41 pm

Anyone have any updates on the T410 and T510? I’m pretty much waiting on these…

  55. Ian Orford on January 2nd, 2010 11:37 am

You have pretty much all that is available right now Bradley on the ThinkPad T410 and T510. The full review info embargo is lifted at 12.01 am on the 4th January, so everything will be going up then including photos! They will be available on the Lenovo Site from the 4th we believe, and we will be seeing the at CES in Vegas! Further reports then Bradley!

  56. Dustin Schultz on January 2nd, 2010 12:04 pm

I am very excited for the T410 to come out. This is what I have been waiting for. The only thing I would like to see and still might hold out for is USB3. But I am guessing that might be a while for the ThinkPads. Anyone know for sure?

  57. Ben on January 9th, 2010 12:01 pm

When will Lenovo get around to fixing the spontaneous shutdown problem in the T400S and, will that problem be gone in the T410S? This has been a huge problem for many customers and is preculding me from buying another machine that evolved from the T400S.

  58. Kai on January 11th, 2010 10:08 pm

    Any coupon code for T510?

  59. Ian Orford on January 14th, 2010 3:31 pm

Not yet Kai, they cannot keep up with supply right now so they are unlikely to offer a ThinkPad T510 Coupon Code!

  60. Ian Orford on January 14th, 2010 3:58 pm

This spontaneous shutdown problem that you are referring to Ben is absolutely new to us! Were are you seeing reference to this and were is your information coming from?

  61. Ian Orford on January 14th, 2010 4:20 pm

The W510 gets USB 3 Dustin, but not the T410 yet!

  62. VonS on January 15th, 2010 2:39 am

    > The W510 gets USB 3 Dustin, but not the T410 yet!

@Ian, there is only ONE port USB 3 on the W510 the other are still USB 2

  63. VonS on January 15th, 2010 2:54 am

Anyway for the few USB 3 devices available today, not sure if this is relevant

  64. Ian Orford on January 19th, 2010 12:14 pm

Your absolutely correct VonS and that was a ‘mashup’ by the ThinkPad Engineers according to a conversation I had with Sam Dursi at CES

Got something to say?
