Lenovo S10 versus the Acer Aspire One, Netbook Review.

Do you ever wonder how writers and reviewers end up recommending one machine rather than another as a ‘Best Buy’. Especially when it’s a detailed side by side comparison?

And they come up with some seemingly weird decision that ends up leaving you scratching your head?

If you do then I want to tell you I had a similar experience the other day after picking up my favorite PC Magazine (in the US anyway), PC World.

There I was shopping in Kroger’s, browsing the magazine stand, and the headline screamed at me, ‘Best Mini Notebooks: Surprising Power for less than $500′

Of course I am a sucker for this sort of thing because I wanted to see how our favourite Netbook, the Lenovo S10 had faired. We recently made our own recommendation and voted the S10 the ‘Best Netbook Buy’

Well PC World did rate the S10 highly, and in fact ranked it in second place.

What? Excuse me? This was one of those ’scratch my head’ moments.

They rate the Aspire with a Workbench Score of 34 compared to the S10 of 41 ‘Superior’

Let’s look at the ‘Bottom Line’ comments as quoted in PC magazine.

Acer Aspire One - Bottom Line: Considering its bargain price, the Aspire One is a steal - until you realize that you want the $100 six-cell battery. (Which they consider to be exorbitant!)

Lenovo S10 - Bottom Line: Faster than its mini-notebook brethren, the S10 offers enough perks to make it a top pick for serious mobility.

OK, so why did the S10 come second to an obviously inferior Netbook with a much lesser spec?

So maybe I’m missing something here? Are we comparing the same thing?

Lets take a look. The Acer Aspire in the reviewed configuration has an 8 Gig flash drive, a cut down version of Linux, mediocre performance and no really usable commercial software apps that can be installed. OK so it’s as pretty as the S10!

So they must have made their decision on price alone, right? At $349, it looks like bargain, it’s just that, well, you can’t do much with it!

The Lenovo S10 on the other hand, runs XP like a dream, has an 8OGB Hard Drive, so you can run and install what you like providing you have a USB CD Drive handy, an awesome screen, and it’s been as low as $379 over the last few weeks with the Lenovo Coupon Code offers.

Right now, prices start at $399, so we stick by our recommendation. The Lenovo S10 is the Netbook to buy.
And in conclusion, all we can say to the writers at PC World magazine is this. Let’s try and be a little more objective guys!

I enjoy my Levono S10. I shopped it and compared to the ACER. I ended up with a 1.6ghz processor, 1.6gb RAM and 100gb storage for just at $449! I think it was a great deal for a great little laptop. I bought a Samsung drive and will mount this lil’ laptop in my vehicle for navi and other uses (DVD viewing etc…)

I have head good things about Lenovo S10 and Acer One. does anyone know which is a better machine?

If you compare the 2, they are exactly same except the Acer One is about $20 cheaper with the 6 cell battery.

I know the Lenovo S10 has a bigger screen and some say it is a little faster but is there anything else that is superior than the Acer One?

I really like the 6 cell battery but am looking for the better machine. If it is very comparable, then I may go with the Acer but I would like someone’s feedback.

    Thank you.

Hi John, we know were are biased, but there is no doubt in our mind that the S10 is the better NetBook. We have compared them side by side. there is no contest.

The S10 is faster than the Aspire, it has a better screen and a superior keyboard and TouchPad. And we also think it looks nicer.

And the final point? The Lenovo S10 its now cheaper than the Aspire One with the new pricing announced yesterday.
