ThinkPad T400 2009 Review

Since we last looked at the ThinkPad T400 a few things have changed – for the better, of course. The compact, high-end T400 maintains much of its definitive ThinkPad design features and options, but a new high brightness display improves usability greatly without sacrificing battery power.

This is a superb machine intended for serious business use, as seen with its basic configuration which includes a high-end Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB RAM, and a host of ThinkVantage software applications.

The base ThinkPad T400 comes standard with the Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 (2.26GHz), which is a supremely capable processor in itself; however, it’s possible to upgrade the unit to a T9600 chip, which clocks in at 2.8GHz and provides staggering speed and performance for a notebook computer, especially one in such a small frame.

The T400 is available with any Windows Vista package in both 32-bit and 64-bit systems, but if you prefer, you can order the Windows XP Professional downgrade. In the coming months, we may see the choice become obsolete as Windows 7 is released.

Change is good

Changed in the recent release of the T400 is the display – still a 14.1-inch WXGA standard – but which is now outfitted with a high brightness LED backlight, making it much simpler to use the T400 in any lighting situation.

Also remarkable is the trademark ThinkPad T400 keyboard, which was reinforced with a new metal back-plate, providing a more solid feel; it’s no wonder that the T400 keyboard has been called “the most comfortable laptop keyboard available today.” Of course, there’s also the ever-present spill guard, comfortable TouchPad, and center keyboard TrackPoint.

And don’t worry; the ThinkLight is still there, too, in order to light the keyboard for use in dark situations.

Iconic design

Designed with traveling communication in mind, the ThinkPad T400 comes equipped with a variety of connectivity features. For when you’re at your home or office, the T400 has an integrated Ethernet card. If you want to connect to external devices, there’s a Bluetooth 2.1 integrated chip and for Wireless Internet access, there’s an integrated WiMAX card and WWAN2 chip with GPS, so you’ll never be far from vital communications.

The T400 comes with a host of inputs for everything you could need when you’re in need of peripherals. There are 3 USB inputs, a VGA display output, an SD-Card Reader, a FireWire input, headphone output, microphone input, lock slot, modem input, LAN input, and a DVD-R optical drive. There’s even an optional 7-in-1 Card Reader for those working with a variety of storage formats.

A 4-cell battery is standard on the T-400 and provides users with about four hours of use, regardless of the high brightness display, which is a pleasant surprise. Optional upgrades include the 6-cell, 9-cell, and 9-cell with bay battery, allowing for up to 13 hours of continuous use; that means that fully outfitted, the T400 could last for an entire trans-Atlantic flight on a single charge.

With a solid shell encasing a strong magnesium alloy ‘Roll Cage’ frame, the T400, like other ThinkPad’s in the T Series family, is a durable machine with outstanding build quality. If any notebook is built to travel, and withstand the knocks and bruises of a busy life, its the T400.

The Only real Choice?

In our opinion the ThinkPad T400 is one of the finest business laptops available today. Though the price is slightly higher than most laptops of its size, the stunning processing speed, wide variety of built-in options and standard software, and typical ThinkPad build quality make it the only real choice for the discerning business user.
