Lenovo ThinkPad T500 updated Review with latest T500 Coupon Code

February 13, 2009

We first reviewed the Lenovo ThinkPad T500 at it’s release back in August so it’s time for a revisit and also to take a look at the latest latest T500 Coupon Codes that are available. The Lenovo ThinkPad T500, like T Series laptops that have preceded it leads a rapidly developing notebook trend. More power, lighter weight, and a longer battery life.

The ThinkPad T500 and its smaller sibling the T400 adds a superb combination of usability, build quality and corporate quality support into the mix.

It may not be as svelte and sexy as a Lenovo ThinkPad X301, but it’s light, is far more powerful and – due in part to its switchable graphics – has incredible battery life. Once you have used a ThinkPad T500 for a couple of hours you’ll be smitten.

With its business like looks and iconic ThinkPad features its sheer practicality puts the ThinkPad T500 and the 14.1″ ThinkPad T400 at the front of the queue for serious business notebook users who want only the best.

Make no mistake, you are going to love using this notebook. The T series just exudes quality and usability and if you’re looking for a laptop companion that will be with you for a long time to come, this is it. As we have said before, the T Series just engenders a ‘Pride of ownership’ thing that no other notebook comes close to.

Base processor configuration is the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz in the US and both the ThinkPad T440 and T500 have the option of switchable graphics: an ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3650 for when it’s connected to the mains, and Intel’s lower-powered GMA X4500MHD for when you’re out and about.

The ATI Chip is fast with 61fps in low settings 3D benchmark is good and promises improved performance in graphically intensive applications that that involve crunching images, video, watching movies and the odd bout of Halo 3 or World of Warcraft.

The T500 screen is outstanding with a huge 1,680 x 1,050 resolution. The backlight is bright and the colour balance is excellent.

Current screen options offer either CCFL or LED. We chose LED when we configured our ThinkPad T500. LED backlights have better viewing angles, can display a larger color gamut, and are much more power efficient. CCFL panels are as bright as LED contrary to popular opinion, but it takes them 10-15minutes to reach the same brightness as an LED screen. Also, CCFL brightness decrease after 1-2 years, depending on usage.

The T500’s ergonomics certainly are excellent. In typical ThinkPad style, you get both TrackPoint and TrackPad. The TrackPad is set very slightly below the level of the wrist rest, reducing the risk of brushing it by accident.

Compared with almost every other laptop brand we use, the T500’s keyboard is superb – the large keys and deep travel make it far superior to using a standalone keyboard. ThinkPad aficionados may notice it’s a little lighter to the touch than previous offerings, and Lenovo seems to have taken notice of the earlier controversy regarding the new lighter weight keyboard and modified the stiffness slightly.

Battery life is very good at around 4 1/2 to 5 hours, but with the 9 Cell battery, which we specified as an option, you’ll get close to 8 hours on the T400, and just over 6 hours on the T500. That doesn’t compete with the outstanding ThinkPad X200 ultraportable, but then the T Series is a bigger machine.

The excellent ThinkVantage tools give fast easy access to components such as wireless modules and battery life settings. A superb suite of useful tools are also available by hitting the blue ‘ThinkVantage’ button above the keyboard. This gives you access to backup utilities, system restore & update tools.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T500 is an outstanding laptop with a combination of the traditionally excellent Lenovo keyboard, large, high-resolution screen and excellent build quality make for a very capable desktop workstation.

The ThinkPad T500 15.4″ widescreen with discrete graphics has a base price of $1310 in the US and with the current Lenovo Coupon Codes you can knock a fair chunk of that price.

We added a few extras to our machine to bring the base price up to $2753, over double, but we did add a stack of options. By the time we used the current ThinkPad T500 Coupon Code, we brought the price of our rig down to $2102, a saving of almost $655!

Our add on’s included an upgraded processor to the Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53GHz, we upgraded to Windows Vista Business from Home Basic, a 15.4 WXGA TFT LED Backlight display, 3 GB DDR3 SDRAM, Fingerprint Reader & 1.3 Megapixel Integrated Camera option, upped the Hard Drive to 250 GB, stuck the Intel® Turbo Memory 2GB hard drive cache on and the ThinkPad Blu-ray Recordable Optical Drive. This was the most expensive option, but well worth it with the DisplayPort. Lets watch some Blu-Ray movies!

Everything else was pretty standard except for the 9 Cell Battery and the 3 Year Next Business day warranty at $89.25

All in all, however you customize your ThinkPad T500, it’s an awesome notebook and should be more than capable of running your life, home and business for the next few years

Is the LED backlight option with the hi-res WSXGA+ (1680×1050) screen? I didn’t think it was as it’s only showing as available for the WXGA (1280×800) screen, not the WSXGA+ screen.

It looks like ti shabbs, I could have sworn that LED backlight option was available a few weeks ago for the hi-res WSXGA+ (1680×1050) screen but it’s difficult to keep up. We go on the site 20 times a day and can’t keep up with the changes!

“The backlight is bright and the colour balance is excellent.”
That is exactly what it’s not! The screen is underlit and with dull colors.

I had to return the laptop because the screen sucked so hard. It’s a shame Lenovo chose such a bad screen – the rest of the laptop is so perfect.

Sorry you had that experience Borge! Without exception every T500 screen we have set eyes on has been superb

I’m having the same experience as Borge. Only when I connected a Lenovo L197 display, which is bright and clear, did I notice how dull my T500 display has been. No, and I mean NO video adjustment in the ATI control panel will improve it. Not that it’s unusalbe, it’s just that it’s not nearly as clear as the external monitor I’m using.

Just realized that this difference could be the difference between a backlit and non-backlit display??? I don’t believe my T500 has this feature.

Got something to say?
