We first reviewed the new ThinkPad X200 in August 08, so its time for an update. In the newest release of the ThinkPad X200, Lenovo’s ultra-portable notebook, the company has improved on the processing capabilities, has further decreased the weight.

More wireless connectivity options are now offered, making the X200 perfect for businesspeople regularly on-the-go. The ThinkPad X200 is an extremely capable machine with superb build quality.

The latest ThinkPad X200 comes standard with the Intel Core 2 Duo P8400(2.26GHz) processor, which, for a notebook of this size, is fast; you may also upgrade to the Intel Core 2 Duo P8600(2.4GHz). Supported by a minimum 3GB of RAM, the X200 is fully capable of running a full suite of programs simultaneously with little lag. There’s also plenty of space for all of your data, since the ThinkPad X200 comes standard with a 160GB hard drive.

Widescreen

The 12.1-inch screen on the X200 – now in widescreen format – may be small, but it packs a visual punch with its sharp colors and extremely crisp picture. The X200 has also been slightly widened to provide for larger keys, which give the user a more comfortable typing experience. Of course, there is also the very responsive and smooth TouchPad with large, red-accented buttons for easy clicking and a center-keyboard TrackPoint for simple navigation.

Staying in Touch

For when you need to stay in touch with colleagues, but you can’t get a wireless signal or for when you just want the reliability of a landline, the X200 features a built-in Gigabit Ethernet card. For wireless access, there’s an integrated Intel Wi-Fi Link 5300 and a Verizon WWAN card; there’s even a Bluetooth chip for use of wireless peripherals.

And Juice on the loose!

Just because the ThinkPad X200 has plenty of power doesn’t mean that it’s a battery hog. In fact, with the standard 6-cell battery, the X200 will run for more than three hours with moderate usage. If you want the X200 operate for an entire trans-Atlantic flight or for a long trip, opt for the 9-cell battery, which will give you about eight-hours of life.

ThinkPad X20o has plenty of ports for peripheral connection. There are 3 USB ports, an Ethernet port, VGA output, microphone input, headphone output, a 5-in-1 card reader and a docking station port for the excellent ThinkPad X200 UltraBase.

The UltraBase supports Ultrabay Slim Blu-ray, CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo and Multi-Burner drives; can also house a second ThinkPad Serial-ATA hard drive, has Integrated battery charger – Lets you power up a spare battery for the road and has Integrated stereo speakers, microphone in, headphone out.

With the UltraBase you also get Digital and analog video support – VGA monitor port and DisplayPort, 4 extra USB ports and it all runs from your standard X200 power supply. The ThinkPad X200 UltraBase adds so much versatility to the ThinkPad x200, its almost a must buy!

Built with a magnesium alloy roll cage and a hard plastic shell, the ThinkPad X200 is sure to endure the rigors of regular travel, regardless of the circumstances. There are also strong steel hinges on the monitor to ensure that it stays put. As with other ThinkPads, there is also a spill-guard on the keyboard that will protect the vital components from any accidents.
