For years Lenovo has been making great tablet machines and the ThinkPad X201 Tablet and ThinkPad X201 MultiTouch Tablet is the company’s – and perhaps the entire genre’s – pinnacle. The new Lenovo ThinkPad X201T Tablet has been designed as a professional grade ultraportable mobile workstation.

The ThinkPad X201T is lighter and faster not only than the previous Lenovo tablet, but also than any other machine in its class. This is thanks in large part to the new Intel Core i7 620LM processor and a standard 4GB of RAM. Also notable, the 620LM is a low-voltage processor, which means that the power increase doesn’t sacrifice battery life. If you need a bit of an extra boost in power for multiple software packages or for memory-intensive programs, opt for the maximum 8GB of RAM, which will make the X201T operate at near the speed of thought.
Unlike many other tablet machines, the ThinkPad X201T has a wide range of hard drive choices, including 7200-rpm disk drives in 250GB, 320GB, and 500GB, as well as solid-state drives in 80GB or 128GB.
Three Screen Options
The 12.1-inch display of the Lenovo ThinkPad X201T is obviously where the machine really shines. The screen has a 1200×800-pixel resolution that is surprisingly bold and vivid in both detail and color. Mounted securely to the display with a 360-degree hinge, you can tell that Lenovo has put its best engineers into designing a durable and versatile tablet mount. In operation, the screen is wonderful. Whether you’re using the stylus or your fingers, the touch response is very fluid and intuitive.
The highlight of the screen is the multi-touch control, which allows users to pinch their fingers together to zoom or double-tap to select programs. Lenovo has integrated its multi-touch technology with Windows 7 in a brilliant way with its SimpleTap application, which removes a lot of the extra selection necessary for navigating with a traditional mouse and keyboard.
For non-touchscreen interaction the X201T sports similar controls to the other X201 machines. Like the others, there is a full-size spill-proof keyboard with the center-mounted TrackPoint that has become the Lenovo hallmark. There’s even a half-size TouchPad – also with multi-touch controls. Overall, the controls are great to work with, as is normally the case with the ThinkPad; you can really tell that these machines were designed with professionals in mind.
The ThinkPad X201T is a bit thicker in the mid-section than the X200T, but that’s all right – you can hardly tell. Plus, the extra space allows for the addition of three USB ports, a VGA output, Ethernet port, microphone/headphone jacks, and ExpressCard/54 slot, and a 5-in-1 card reader.
For Professionals ‘On The Go’
The X201T is truly an “in the field” machine in that it has not only Ethernet and WiFi ports, but there is also an option for WiMAX 3G mobile broadband, which would come in really handy when you’re nowhere near a landline and far from a wireless signal.
The ThinkPad X201 Tablet is a Professional Grade notebook specifically designed to put computing power in the hands of mobile workers where ever they are, wirelessly and seamlessly. From Healthcare workers who need medical records at their fingertips so that data can be shared in real time.
This makes for effortless collaboration with colleagues enabling speedier analyses and diagnoses. Field and service personnel from Emergency services, government, construction and architecture professionals will appreciate the lightweight, wirelessly connected ThinkPad X201 with easy data-entry capabilities, and long battery life. Sales Pro’s are well catered for with a whole range of enterprise software applications available.
Excellent Battery Life
The battery on the Lenovo ThinkPad X201T tablet computer is a Lithium Ion four-cell or eight-cell device. If you’re traveling a lot, which you most likely are if you’re interested in the X201T, opt for the eight-cell, since it will give you nearly double the battery life. That’s important because, although the Intel Core i7 low-voltage processors are very powerful and relatively efficient, they still pull a lot of juice.
A highly versatile machine, the Lenovo ThinkPad X201T is also extremely durable. There is a roll-cage beneath supporting both the display and the body of the machine and the case is made of a hard resin. The mount and hinge for the screen – which rotates 360-degrees – offers a very stable attachment to the machine base. The design is traditional ThinkPad – that is to say, black and boxy – so ThinkPad enthusiasts will be naturally drawn to it.

Very informative. I am trying to decide between the X200 tablet and the X201. My wife just ordered the X201 through work, but mine is a personal purchase and I don’t know if I want to spend that kind of money right now. I was wondering, do you know if the multi-touch screen on the X200 is the same as the X201? Interesed in brightness and touch response. I don’t need an i-7 processor so if the displays are the same I can do without the touchpad and the faster processor to save some money. Thanks.
techgeek, we are certain that the multi-touch on the X201 is the same as that on the X200, in fact this came up in a conversation with one of the ThinkPad lead engineers Sam Dursi at CES. If we find out different we will let you know! Cheers, Ian
I see that there are two display options on the x201
1) 12.1″ Multitouch WXGA LED Panel with Wide viewing Angle
2) 12.1″ SuperBright Outdoor WXGA LED Panel with Wide viewing Angle
It is not clear from reading that if the second option (SuperBright Outdoor) also supports multi-touch.
It isn’t clear Krish you are correct, but the SuperBright Outdoor is also Multitouch as we understand it but please double check before you go ahead and purchase!
Krish,
SuperBright outdoor is NOT MultiTouch. SuperBright, rated at 400 nits is pen only and has a flush frame, while MultiTouch, rated at 300 nits, is pen + finger touch capable and has a more bulky frame. You clearly need to chose between brightness and touch capability.
Thanks for the excellent clarification on that Diego
